Q&A with Emma of E.L.Sart
Emma Stanley is an artist based in Tamworth NSW. Swapping her paint brush for an Apple pencil after becoming a mum, Emma continues to create beautiful pieces for others to enjoy, all while navigating the new-found busyness of day-to-day life. With beautiful designs for just about every occasion and workshops coming up in the near future, Emma is an artistic force who loves to share what she creates, and now she can teach you too.
Tell us a little about E.L.Sart?
E.L.Sart simply stands for Emma Louise Stanley art. I have always loved art and I was a high school art teacher for the first decade of my working life. After having kids, working on larger scale pieces at home became more difficult, so I invested in an iPad and Apple pencil which have allowed me to create on the go, on the couch at night, or during a spare 10 minutes in the car. Having a business selling my art has always been a huge dream of mine and I’m finally following my passion.
Why do you create?
I create because it’s part of me – it calms me. Time flies when I'm in the creative zone. Whenever I’ve had a break from the process I find my mood in general takes a dive. Whenever I’m working on something that I'm really happy with, I feel inspired and excited about life.
What inspires you?
So much inspires me – the work of other artists, nature. I can be inspired by small things like a cool paint colour, a fabric design, a magazine page, or a display on a shelf. It plants a seed in my mind and it grows. I find my best ideas come when I allow my brain to think – it’s the quiet moments, like when I’m sat in a dark room rocking my daughter, or while taking a quiet walk through nature. My mind clears and my inspiration and creativity come through.
What do you have planned for the future?
I have so many ideas – I just need the time. I want to keep expanding my business by continuing to grow my stock. I also plan to branch into more workshops under E.L.Sart. I’d love to also get back to creating some large pastel works again, too.
If you could give someone one piece of advice about becoming an artist, what would it be?
Create what inspires you rather than what you think the audience will like or what you think will sell – it will fill your soul and you will attract a more genuine customer base. Slow and steady is the key and consistency pays off. Look for inspiration everywhere.
