Steam Train Tours in the New England Region

Take a ride through history on this 121-year old Steam Train touring the New England region this August.

Known as the ‘English Express Locomotive’, the 4-6-0 express passenger train originally entered service in 1902. Later in 1924, the train was renamed Locomotive 3265.

The 32 class trains hauled a number of passenger services across the state, gracing almost all of New South Wales train lines. Then in 1933, Locomotive 3265 was equipped with superheating, painted maroon and began hauling the Northern Commercial Limited express to Newcastle.

Gradually over time, the 32 class trains were replaced, with the last steam-hauled passenger train in NSW taking passengers from Newcastle to Singleton in 1971. Thanks to the Powerhouse Museum, Locomotive 3265 was restored in 2009 and after receiving further mechanical repairs with Transport Heritage NSW, returned to the tracks in 2019.

Fast forward to 2023, 121 years after its original build and you can take a tour throughout New England on this very train. Enjoy tours from Tamworth or Armidale, or take a one-way trip from Maitland to Werris Creek, and Werris Creek to Armidale.
